Personal Top 5 Authors List
S P Oldham
Most of us readers and writers have a favourite author or two; someone whose work inspires, excites, interests or challenges us. I love the feeling I get when I buy a new book by one of my favourites - in fact I did that very thing only yesterday - 'Ravenspur' the next in the 'Wars of the Roses' series by Conn Iggulden.
So who counts amongst your list of favourite writers? Mine are as follows:
Sir Terry Pratchett - much missed but the man left an incredible legacy. So profoundly perceptive, witty, intelligent, observant and above all, human, despite his characters being fantastical in nature. This man has given me many, many wonderful hours of reading and he has to rank top of my list. His footnotes were a real treat!
Conn Iggulden - entirely different sort of writer, nevertheless brilliant in my view. Immensely knowledgeable and readable. I look forward to a new Conn Iggulden book every bit as much as I used to look forward to one by STP. Probably joint in first for me.
Lindsey Davies - I fell in love with Falco, Petro and Helena Justina! Am now enjoying Flavia Albia. Love Lindsey Davies' knowledge of the period in history and the humorous touch she applies to her writing. Flavia has learned a trick or two off her cynical old dad and I really love how she makes references to him with affection and begrudging respect in these new books - really makes the characters come to life. I can picture Marcus Didius in my head. I so wish they would make this a series on television - as long as it was REALLY WELL DONE as the books deserve. As for 'Rebels & Traitors' - could not put it down. Superb!
Bernard Cornwell - not so much Sharpe, though obviously they are very good and what most people probably know him for. I loved 'Stonehenge,' really thought it was an excellent, gripping read. The Pagan Lord, The Empty Throne, 1356 all great reads.
Phillipa Gregory - I know, I know, another 'historical' writer! I can't help it, I love it! And I love her writing and the way she makes you totally 'buy in' to her characters.
Off the top of my head that would be my Top 5 List, so to speak, thought there are many other authors I enjoy as well as several 'one-offs' for want of a better phrase.
So over to you - favourite writers. What the hell - your top 5 or less. Go for it!
P.S Interesting little side note - the top three authors in my list I discovered 'accidentally.' If only all accidents ended so entirely happily!
